The Leader as Coach – 1.5 days

Framework
Leaders are effective only if people are willing to follow them. But people’s needs for leadership are very different. Some want strong, assertive leaders, others want leaders to listen and learn. Some want leaders who nurture them; others prefer leaders simply to set direction and then step back and let people free to deliver results.

Target audience
Any manager who needs to work closely with individuals within a diverse organizational community; HR professionals responsible for bringing about a culture of coaching within their managerial community.

Issues to be dealt with
• What is coaching and why use it?
• The TRACTICS model of managerial interventions;
• Giving and receiving feedback;
• The BREAD model of what to watch out for when coaching;
• Motivators, drivers and values;
• The LCS model;
• Designing a coaching session;
• The GROW model;
• Personality profiles – introduction to MBTI;
• Designing coaching programmes.
   
How would the course look like
A highly practical and interactive course, during which participants will have plenty of opportunity to practice coaching and to receive feedback on their progres. Before attending the course, participants should complete:

• LCS Personal Assessment (Coaching version)
• MBTI

The results of these will be fed back to participants during the course.

Participants will also receive a set of coaching scenarios that will be used in practical sessions throughout the course. Before attending, participants will be asked to select from these scenarios situations that they can relate to and use as a basis for their practice coaching exercises.

Specific objectives:
• Define and understand the wide range of coaching styles people can
   use;
• Discover the coaching style that works best for the individual;
• Develop a range of coaching skills that meet the needs of a diverse 
   community;
• Achieve competence in the skills of coaching people with a range of
   coaching needs.

Learning outomes
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Define and work with a variey of coaching styles;
• Adapt their coaching styles to the differing needs of individuals they are
   coaching;
• Set up coaching programmes that meet the needs of different
   individuals.



   

Trainer



Keith Patching is a trainer and consultant in leadership and organization development. He previously held the position of Director of the Management Development Unit at Cranfield University School of Management. Keith Patching also wrote and published a number of books, such as Management and Organisation Development: Beyond arrows, boxes and circles (Macmillan Business, London 1999), Corporate Politics for IT Managers (Butterworth Heinemann, London 2000) and Leadership, Character and Strategy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006). Amongst others, he has worked for Barclays Capital, Citigroup, Lucent Technologies, Phillip Morris, Toshiba, Sara Lee, NCR, and for the European Investment Fund in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America. He is specialized in helping individuals, teams and organisations to become more effective through the development and implementation of individuals’ unique potential and strengths.
